An unexpected invitation for a reunion with a couple of friends from childhood has brought me to L'opera Patisserie in Richmond.  I have heard of lots of rave reviews of this little patisserie and was really looking forward to try out their high tea.  The place is known for their macaroons, croissants, and high tea.  I had high tea today and I took home a dozen macaroons and 2 individual desserts.  If you don’t have time to read the whole review…macaroons are really nice, even at $2 each, but with the high tea having bumping up the price from $29 to $45…you can’t really blame me for expecting more.

First thing first, macaroons, compare to the Thierry’s, Soiertte's, and other top rated macaroon in Vancouver, the size is smaller but the flavours punch you :)  I was pleasantly surprised by the toony sized macaroon today, with $2 each, I think its fairly price and my favourite right now in vancouver.  The flavour that they are able to pack into this little thing is pretty cool, but their claim of all natural ingredients are really debatable…depending on what you really consider natural and don’t mind food colourings and flavouring extracts :)  I rate them 5 out of 5 with current pricing of $2 per piece~

So…the high tea…if its $29 I understand why it got raved review and I would have give one if that is the case….at $45 I would have to say I expected more.  I am picky and not picky depends on what I have paid for…>.>…I still love my instant noodles at a dollar each when the time calls if you know what I mean :)

The first served was french onion soup, with msg instead of a properly executed beef stock.  Then the focal point was scallop on micro greens…at $29 I understand scallop is pre-cooked then warmed and just daikon micro green, but at $45 I would expect cooked to order and cooked to perfection with mixed micro and cheese crisp not stale, smoked salmon quiche should not use smoked trout…. then the flaky pastry that taste stale…so you know what I mean.  I would have gave then another rave review if it is priced at the original price $29 and honestly they are probably the best in the high tea market in vancouver area at the moment…I have my reservations.
